| | | Louis Vernon “Vern” Richardson, age 85, of Washington, Iowa died Sunday, July 5, 2009 at the Halcyon House in Washington following several years of declining health.
Celebration of life services will be held 1:30 pm Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with Fr. Paul Appel officiating. Visitation will begin noon Tuesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 Tuesday evening. Prayer services will be held 6:00 pm Tuesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for St. James Catholic Church, Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund or Hospice of Washington County. Vern was born September 29, 1923 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Wilbur R. “Irish” and Dorothy Mae (Fritz) Richardson. He was a graduate of Washington High School and attended Washington Junior College for one year. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in January 1943, where he served as a radio operator, including assignments in Egypt and Sudan. Vern was severely injured when the camp radio station collapsed in a storm and was honorably discharged in January 1946 at the rank of Seargant. He was united in marriage to Lois Rose Fitzgerald on January 4, 1946 at the St. James Church Rectory in Washington, Iowa.
The Richardsons resided in Washington approximately eight years after their marriage. They later resided in Swisher, the Amana Colonies and Oxford. Vern was employed as driver of a milk tanker for the Amana Colonies dairy farmers and sold milking equipment and water softening systems. The couple returned to Washington from Oxford in 1962, when they purchased the Iowa Café from his mother. Vern and Lois operated what was remodeled into the Iowa Frontier Restaurant for more than 25 years until his retirement in 1987.
He is a member of St. James Catholic Church, the VFW and the State Restaurant Association.
Vern is survived by his wife Lois Richardson of Washington, Iowa; two sons: J. Brian Richardson and wife Felicia of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and E. Douglas Richardson and wife Patricia of Eagle River, Alaska; two daughters: Wendy L. Heck of Washington, Iowa and Beth Anne Williams and husband Rodger of Henderson, Nevada. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Christopher Richardson and wife Leslie of Seattle, Washington; Kylynne Kruse of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Jennifer Richardson of Anchorage, Alaska; Michelle Winn and husband Ryan of Anchorage, Alaska; Jared Heck and wife Kristin Gehrels of St. Charles, Illinois; Jordan Heck of Washington, Iowa; Stacy Edwards Tuttle and husband Matt of Fairbanks, Alaska; Rebecca Edwards Allhiser of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; ten great grandchildren; one brother Joe Richardson and wife Bev of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; two sisters Patricia Peyton of Iowa City, Iowa and Joanne Bell and husband Robert of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one grandson Barry T. Richardson; one daughter-in-law, Judith A. Richardson; and one son-in-law, James E. Heck.
