Thelma Bernice Farrier, age 87, of Wayland died Friday July 17, 2009 at Mercy Hospital Hospice Center in Iowa City following an extended illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Tuesday July 21, 2009 at the
Bethel Mennonite Church in rural Wayland with Pastor Phil Slabaugh officiating. Visitation will begin 12:00 pm Monday at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday evening. Interment will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth. Memorials have been established to Bethel Mennonite Church, Hospice of Washington County or to the Ainsworth American Legion for the Avenue of Flags. Thelma was born on March 23, 1922 in Ainsworth, Iowa the daughter of Earl Edward and Mable Elizabeth (McFarland) Gesling. She attended school in Ainsworth. Thelma was united in marriage to Delbert Goodwin in 1940 in Washington, Iowa. She was later united in marriage to Lee Farrier on November 29, 1947 in Davenport, Iowa. Thelma was a homemaker and enjoyed raising her family. She was a member of the Bethel Mennonite Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Thelma is survived by her three sons, David D. (Butch) Goodwin of Washington; Donald L. Goodwin and wife Beverly of Iowa City; Rick Farrier and friend Martha Hunzinger of Coralville; three grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline Smithburg of Wayland; Carol Melichar of Edina Minnesota; Lois Stout of West Burlington; and one brother, Robert Gesling of Ainsworth.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lee in 1989; one grandson, Paul Goodwin, brother, Harold Gesling; sister, Leila Kelly; brother, Harvey Gesling; and one nephew, Tom Gesling.
