| | | Myra Vivian VanNostrand Schroeder, 90, of Washington died Saturday August 1, 2009 at Halcyon House in Washington following a brief illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Thursday August 6, 2009 at the Faith Baptist Church in Washington with Pastor Harald Gruber officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm Wednesday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Interment will take place at Wellman Cemetery in Wellman. Memorials may be directed to Coalition for Seniors and Community Services (CSCS), Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund, or to the Washington Community School District. Myra was born on August 10, 1918 in Washington, Iowa the daughter of Emmett Ross and Alma (Sowash) VanNostrand. She was raised south of Washington. Myra graduated from Washington High School, Washington Junior College, Parsons College in Fairfield, and the University of Iowa with a BA degree in Elementary Education. On June 28, 1947 Myra was united in marriage to Charles Henry Schroeder at her parent’s home in Washington. Myra worked as a teacher for more than 70 years and was a business woman. She taught in several surrounding communities including, Brighton, Oakville, Conroy and North English. Later she taught at Mid-Prairie Jr. High School in Kalona and at schools in Pocahontas and Keota. Following her retirement Myra was still dedicated to the educational system by serving as a teacher’s aide at Stewart Elementary in Washington. She lived in Wellman for 41 years. She retired to Halcyon House in 1988.
Myra was a longtime member of the United Methodist Church in Washington and more recently made Faith Baptist Church in Washington her church home. She was a member of Professional Women of Washington, CSCS Coalition for Seniors and Community Services, and AARP Chapter 4926. She was also involved in the ACCT after school program in Washington.
She is survived by her children, Douglas E. Schroeder of Northglenn, Colorado; Steven J. Schroeder of Bellevue, Iowa; Sandra S. Hotchkiss and husband James of Washington, Iowa; 7 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1965; an infant brother Robert R. VanNostrand; brother, E. James VanNostrand
