Lester L. Worley, age 82, of Washington died Friday August 28, 2009 at his home, surrounded by his family following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Mass of the Resurrection and Celebration of Life will be held 10:30 am Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington. Visitation will begin 12:00 pm Tuesday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Tuesday evening. Prayer services will be held 7:30 pm Tuesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Iowa City Hospice. Online condolences may be sent for Les’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com.

Les was born April 6, 1927 the son of Clayton and Dorothy (Beliel) Worley. He attended school in Brighton and Washington, Iowa. Following high school Les served in the United States Navy aboard USS Knudson from December 1944 until August 1946. Les had the honor of being stationed on the destroyer escort that kept watch during the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and also during the signing of the peace treaty ending World War II. Les was united in marriage on September 8, 1948 to Rose Mary Fritz at St. James Church in Washington, Iowa.

He owned and operated Hometown Dairy in Washington, Iowa and later owned and operated Gulf Service station along with his brother Verle. Les worked as the service manager at the Chevrolet dealership in Washington and also as parts manager at Crane Valves. Les worked as the custodian at the Washington County Courthouse and later at St. James Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Mary Worley of Washington; daughter Diane Worley of Iowa City, Iowa; son LaVon Worley and wife Judy of Sperry, Iowa and their daughter Kendra Weingart and husband Greg and great granddaughter Presley; son Les Worley and wife Linda of Coralville, Iowa; daughter Debra Rivey and husband Mike of Missoula, Montana and their children Josh and Sam; daughter Cassandra Puder and husband Jason of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and their children Tanner and Jordyn; daughter Amy Purdy and husband Nate of Olathe Kansas and their children Alexis and Cole; and one sister Doris Mineart of Fairfield, Iowa.

Les was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son Stephen, and five brothers, Bob, Verle, Ken, Jim and Raeferd.

Les enjoyed his dear family, playing cards and cribbage, and woodworking. He never knew a stranger. To know Les, for 5 minutes or for 50 years, was to know a genuine soul – one who always put others’ needs before his own, even in his final days. He was selfless, caring, and generous beyond measure. Les touched a special place in the hearts of everyone who met him. To those of us lucky enough to have crossed his path, our lives will forever be changed.
