John C. Turner, age 74, of Washington, died Thursday September 10, 2009 at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Monday September 14, 2009 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home with Rev. Fred Bickhart officiating. Visitation will begin 11:00 am Sunday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 Sunday evening. Interment with military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established to Hospice of Central Iowa. John was born September 4, 1935 in rural Washington County, Iowa the son of Charles and Maxine Belle (Jones) Turner. He attended school in Wayland, Iowa. On January 13, 1954, John was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Harland in Washington, Iowa. John served in the United States Navy for 8 years. Following his years of service John worked at Cargill for 29 years and for Fansteel in the maintenance department. John also farmed south of Washington for many years. He enjoyed square dancing, fishing, hunting, and he loved to work. John loved visiting with people and spending time with family and friends.

John is survived by his wife, Barb of Washington; daughter, Cathy Dobbins and husband Allen of Sigourney; son, Steve Turner and wife Deb of Washington; six grandchildren - Kristi Connell and husband Corey, Kelli Webb and husband Scott, Mathew Dobbins, Brayton Turner, Danaka Turner and Parker Turner; three great grandchildren – Clare Connell, Olivia Webb and Kaycee Connell; sister Geneva Genkinger and husband Jack of Washington; brother, Ben Turner and wife Bert of Washington; and brother, Bill Turner and wife Janice of Wayland.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, John Alvin Turner in 1978; one infant daughter; and one sister, Mary Malloy.
