| | | Louise Engel, age 87, of Washington died Friday, October 9, 2009 at the Washington County Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Washington Mennonite Church with Rev. Diane Zaerr Brenneman and Rev. Grant Nebel officiating. Visitation will begin noon Monday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 Monday evening. Interment will take place at the Grace Hill Moravian Cemetery in rural Washington County. Memorials have been established for Gideon’s International or the Alzheimer’s Association. Louise was born August 7, 1922 in Clay, Iowa the daughter of Max and Maude (Woodford) Waterhouse. She attended school in Brighton and graduated from Brighton High School. She attended Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. On October 26, 1947, Louise was united in marriage to Eugene Engel at the Grace Hill Moravian Church.
She worked as a secretary of the South East Iowa Conservation Commission Office at Lake Darling for 11 years until her retirement in 1984. In her earlier years she taught country school in Washington County.
Louise was a member of the Washington Mennonite Church, the Gideon’s International Auxiliary and a former member of Chapter AQ of PEO.
She is survived by her husband Eugene Engel of Washington, Iowa; daughter Mary Martin and husband Harmon of Washington, Iowa; son Frederick “Fritz” Engel and wife Sharon of Brighton, Iowa; daughter Christina Dyess and husband James of Houston, Texas; and ten grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Robert Waterhouse; and two sisters Maxine Waterhouse and Irene Stacy.
