| | | Frances W. McAvoy, 90, of Washington died Sunday October 25, 2009 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following a two week decline in health.
Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Friday October 30, 2009 at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington with Rev. Bob Wollenberg officiating. Visitation will begin 12:00 pm Thursday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Thursday evening. Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. Frances was born on August 9, 1919 at home on her family’s farm 4 miles south of Wellman in Cedar Township, Iowa. She was the only daughter of Jacob S. and Mary Ellen (Wade) Fisher. She attended Pleasant Mound School, a one room country school, through the 8th grade. She graduated from Wellman High School in 1936 and was a graduate of Washington Junior College in 1939. Following community college, she worked for the local telephone company, were she met her future husband. Frances was united in marriage to Marion “Charlie” Shrader McAvoy on October 12, 1941 at the First Presbyterian Church in Washington, Iowa.
Following World War II, Frances was a secretary and bookkeeper for Washington Manufacturing for 23 years. Frances was an active participant in many organizations in Washington County. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary since 1940 and served as president and post district president. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church where she served as treasurer for over 20 years and was a member of Circle. Frances was an active member in the Fortnightly Club, serving as a member since World War II. She had been a member of the YWCA since the 1950’s. She provided many hours of volunteer service to the YMCA Swim Team while her children participated. Her recreational activities included aquatic aerobics at the YMCA, walking, lunching and visiting with friends, and playing chicken tracks with family. She has also done needle work including knitting, crocheting and sewing. She enjoyed painting, using water colors, chalk, or oils and making batik pictures which have been enjoyed by family and friends. Her laugh could often be heard at the community theater or at the high school when she attended productions and any musical offering in town. She enjoyed people and supported youth in town by adopting them as her kids.
She is survived by one daughter, Doylene Hergert and her husband Gary of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; two sons, Dana McAvoy and his wife Cathy (Mangold) of Seattle, Washington; Drew McAvoy and his wife Barb (Nuck) of Cincinnati, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Andrew Hergert, Kaylee McAvoy, and Kristen McAvoy all of Seattle, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Wayne and Earl Fisher.
