Norman “Norm” Phelps, 67, of La Porte City, died Sunday, July 12, 2009 at his home from complications of diabetes. He was born April 22, 1942 in Vinton the son of Melvin and Norma Jenks Phelps. He graduated from Geneseo High School. He married Becky Appleton on May 26, 1990 in La Porte City.

Norm retired from John Deere Company in 2002. He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

Survived by: his wife Becky of La Porte City; three sons, Shannon (Jen) Phelps of Cedar Rapids, Rob (Angie) Purdy of La Porte City, Jason Blocker of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Shimen (Darrel) Averhoff of Shell Rock, Kari Wright of La Porte City; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: his parents; one brother, Merlin Phelps and one sister, Susan Phelps.

Services: will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at La Porte City Funeral Service with burial in the Bear Creek Cemetery in rural Brandon. Military Rites will be conducted by the La Porte City American Legion San Diego Post #207 and the VFW Post 3983. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at La Porte City Funeral Service and one hour before the service at the funeral home.
