| | | Michael Delving Curry, age 61 of Iowa City, Iowa and formerly of Waterloo, died July 9, 2009 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City of cancer.
He was born December 22, 1947 in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Rev. Joseph Dennis and Louise Frances (Longstreet) Curry. He attended Hawthorne Elementary School in Waterloo and South High School and Tech High School in Omaha, NE. Michael earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and a Master’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Northern Iowa.
He was married to Marquita Phillips and they later divorced but to this union were born two sons. He married Frances Levack in 1995 and they divorced in 2004. In January 2009, he moved back to Iowa City and was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He spent the last few months of his life with Frances and her two sons, Leroy and Avery.
In 1978, he was the first voice of radio station KBBG and was a well known radio announcer in the Waterloo and Cedar Rapids area. He was the manager in training while working at the National Tea Company. Michael was self employed by hosting dance and skating parties and was very talented at skating on his roller skates.
Michael confessed Christ at an early age and attended Antioch Baptist Church as a youth. He later developed a relationship with Christ and would often have biblical discussions with his father. During his last few months here on earth, Michael was always found carrying his bible and studying the word.
Survivors include his children, Warren, Dana, Amber, Shundelle and Angela; his father, Rev. Joseph Curry of Waterloo; five sisters, JoAnn (Brian) Henry, Lynette McIntosh-Curry and Sheila (Juan) Hollingsworth all of Waterloo, and Kathy Graves and Giselle Graves, of St. Paul, MN; six brothers, Gary D. (Beverly) Curry of Yuma, AZ, Delbert Graves of St. Paul, MN, Lawrence Bryant of Cedar Rapids, IA, Oliver (JoAnne) Bryant of Waterloo, Charles Curry of Phoenix, AZ and Joel Curry of Denver, CO.
He was preceded in death by his mother, a brother, Joseph Dennis Curry, Jr. and followed in death by his sister, Billie Jo McCants on July 13, 2009.
Joint Memorial Services for Michael and his sister Billie Jo McCants be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 17, 2009 at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church in Waterloo. The family will greet friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
Memorials may be directed to the family at 627 Beech Street, where they will receive friends.
