| | | Harry Reginald “Skip” Holton, Jr., 56, of Waterloo, died Sunday, August 2, 2009, at Covenant Medical Center of heart failure.
He was born May 25, 1953 in McAllen, Texas, son of Harry Reginald and Ella Kathleen Smith Holton, Sr. He married Suzann Buss March 10, 1990 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were later divorced.
Skip had been a touring golf professional since 1979, playing in the U.S. and Canadian Opens, among many other tours. He was the assistant golf professional at Irv Warren Golf Course at one time. At the time of his death, he had been the golf professional at Gates Park Golf Course for nineteen years. He was a member of the Iowa PGA. Skip was a graduate of Roosevelt Des Moines High School and Morningside, now Kirkwood College, where he was a lifetime member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. Skip was an avid hunter, enjoyed league pool in the Cedar Valley, representing Smitty’s Bar. He especially enjoyed spending time with his children and took great pride in their accomplishments. Skip became an organ donor when he died.
Survivors include one son, Jace James Holton and a daughter, Allie Suzann Holton, both at home; a stepdaughter, Ashley Rae Meyer of Phoenix, Arizona; two sisters, Beverly Johnson of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Kathy Bloodsworth of South Carolina; two nephews, Tom Kibler and Beckett Hills; and a niece, Sandy Neal. .
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with cremation to follow. A tree will be planted in Skip’s memory at Gates Park Golf Course.
Public visitation will be 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball and one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the Skip Holton Memorial Fund for the education of Allie and Jace Holton at Iowa Community Credit Union.
Skip will always be remembered for his sense of humor.
