John G. Blietz, 90, of Waterloo, died Tuesday August 11, 2009 at Colonial Manor in Elma of natural causes.

He was born in a log cabin three miles northeast of Monona April 19, 1919, son of Hugo G. and Lydia Scheffert Blietz. He married Maxine Johnson January 11, 1959 in Monona. She preceded him in death on April 2, 2009.

After attending the University of Iowa, Mr. Blietz was employed at Hinson Manufacturing Company and also as a self-employed tax preparer for many years. John was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in WW II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, and VFW, as well as a member of the Methodist Men's Club, where served he as secretary/treasurer. Mr. Blietz also had several longtime hobbies, which included fishing, hunting and bee keeping since he was a freshman in high school. John had a love for dogs too.

Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and three brothers, Hugo Kenneth Blietz and two in infancy.

Services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, with burial in Sunnyside Memorial Gardens in Charles City. Public visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church.. Garden View Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Men's Club at St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
