| | | Gary Dean Olson, 69, of La Porte City, died Thursday, August 13, 2009 at Sunnycrest Nursing Center in Dysart of Parkinson’s Disease. He was born July 26, 1940 in Waterloo; the son of Leslie K. and Elena M. Sorensen Olson. He married Nancy Langford on February 21, 1959 in Waterloo.
He worked as a mechanic for John Deere for 30 years, retiring in 1988. During that time he also farmed in the area. He was a member of the Isaak Walton, American Lutheran Church in La Porte City, a Union Steward for the Local 838, and an avid hunter, fisherman and pilot.
Survived by: his wife Nancy of La Porte City; three daughters, Diana ( Richard) Sloan of Rowley, Darla (Kurt) Gerdes of Monona, Dana (Rob) Wilson of La Porte City; four grandchildren, Tyler and Jilana Gerdes, Luke and Emma Wilson; one sister, Leslie Breakenridge of Hudson; two step brothers, Gary Schons of Windom, MN, Dick (Marilyn) Schons of Waterloo; three step sisters, Diane (Jim) Christopher of Waterloo, Janelle (Ron) Peeler of Bowling Green, KY, Annette (Steve) Thompson of Thousand Oaks, CA; one brother-in-law Rick Langford of La Porte City; one nephew, Christopher Langford of San Antonio, TX and two nieces, Jayme Baugher of Jacksonville, FL and Nicole Heier of Kansas City, MO.
Preceded in death by: his father, Leslie; his mother and step father, Elena and Gerald Schons; one brother, David Olson; one sister, Connie Olson and a brother-in-law, John Breakenridge.
Services: will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 17, 2009 at the American Lutheran Church with burial in the West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Visitation will be held Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at the La Porte City Funeral Service and one hour before the service at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to the family, where a memorial fund will be established.
