Arlen L. Wilder, 78, of Independence, formerly of Waterloo, died Friday, October 30, 2009 at the Buchanan County Health Center of natural causes.

He was born June 4, 1931 in Waterloo, son of Byrle M. and Norma Crosby Wilder. He married Marita J. Franck August 1, 1954 in Waterloo. She preceded him in death on March 24, 2009.

Mr. Wilder was employed by the Illinois Central Railroad for 40 years before retiring. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include five sisters-in-law, Audrey Cook of Independence, Ellen Harris of Texas, Ramona (Allen) Peterson of LaPorte City, Zelda (Joe) Andersen of Independence, and Loretta (Kenny) Wright of Walker; two brothers-in-law, Robert (Elsie) Franck of Arkansas, and Maynard Franck of Woodward; several nieces and nephews; and two sisters, Joellen (Cliff) Mittlestradt of Ozark, Missouri, and Dawn (Denny) Hoffman of Waterloo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife; and brother, Ian Wilder.

Services will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Public visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at Garden View Chapel and one hour prior to the service at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.
