Iona A. Borchers, 87, of Denver, died Friday morning, Jan 14, 2011 at the Denver Sunset Home in the presence of her family.

Iona was born January 22, 1923 in Barron County, WI, the daughter of Albert A. and Gena Shold Johnson. She was baptized on March 4, 1923 at the Norwegian Lutheran Church in Barron, WS and later confirmed at the same church. Iona attended elementary school through the eighth grade at the rural Beckwith School and graduated from Barron High School in May of 1940.

She married George W. Borchers on June 29, 1940 in Cameron, WI. For the first year and a half after marriage, they made their home n Waterloo, but returned to Prairie Farm, WI where they farmed until 1950 when they sold their farm and moved to Cedar Falls. In 1951, they moved to an acreage 11/2 miles south of Denver on Highway 63. Her husband died on June 1, 1979. In November of 1990 Iona moved to a duplex on Fayette Street in Denver and later into the Fairview Village Senior Apartments. In August of 2009 Iona entered the Denver Sunset Home.

Iona was a member of St Peter Lutheran Church since 1951. All of Iona's married life she was a member of Lutheran women's organizations including Ladies Aide, Mission Circle, and WELCA. For many years, Iona was active in the St Peter Quilting Ministry and the Denver Sunset Home Auxiliary. She was also a charter member of the Grey Ladies of Denver (a branch of the Red Cross) from 1955 until they disband in 1965.

Iona is survived by two sons, Robert (Lynn) Borchers of Melbourne, FL and Jack (Nancy) Borchers of Dubuque; one daughter, Betty Jo "B.J." (Charles) Tucker of Los Gatos, CA; eleven grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Kay Gleason; a granddaughter, Sarah Tucker; a great grandson, Christian Borchers; a brother, Tony Johnson and a sister, Nona Dannheim.
