Richard Emery Merrill, Topeka, passed away on Sunday, July 8, 2012, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City MO.

Richard was born in the Cottage Hill area at Waterville KS on June 15, 1937, the son of Paul and Grace Powell Merrill. He served in the US Navy from 1956 to 1960 on the USS Midway, the USS Bennington and the USS Ticonderoga. He then transferred to the Navy Reserve for two years.

Richard married Delores Schilling on June 11, 1961 in the Dover/Willard community where they lived for the last 51 years. She survives.

Richard worked for Permaweld and then for Santa Fe Railroad where he retired after 37 years of service. Richard attended the Dover Federated Church. He was a longtime member of the Odd Fellows, a volunteer fire fighter for 10 years and a Boy Scout leader. He participated in archery competitions and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He enjoyed socializing, reading, genealogy, gardening, playing with his dog and especially spending time with the grandkids.

Richard is also survived by his children, Robert Merrill, Judy Fiegener (Jim), Cherilyn Olmsted (Randy), Susan Allen (Tom), Kevin Merrill (Sally), Charles Merrill (Yvonne); nine grandchildren; his brothers, Morris Merrill (Jean), Martin Merrill (Linda); and his sister, Ann Foster (Don). He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Merrill will lie in state and family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at Dover Federated Church. Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Dover Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Dover Community Center, Dover Odd Fellows and Dover Federated Church, sent in care of Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 2801 SW Urish Road, Topeka KS 66614.
