Negaunee dateline
Emil Arvid Jarvi, age 88 of 328 Rolling Mill Rd., Negaunee, died at 4:30 a.m. on Monday, December 15, 2008, surrounded by his family, at the Mather Nursing Center where he had been a hospice patient for one day.
Emil was born September 11, 1920 in Ishpeming, MI to Arvid and Esther K. (Gronberg) Jarvi. and graduated from Negaunee High School with the class of 1938. Following his graduation from school, Emil worked at the McCormick Tract with his stepfather. Emil then proceeded to work 42 years for Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company at various underground operations. In the 1940's he was active in the Steelworkers organizing committees, which eventually helped lead to the formation & recognition of the local Steelworker unions.
Emil also served in the U.S. Army from 1945-46.
He married Betty Jean Hill on October 16, 1943 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Mission Church in Palmer and they celebrated 62 years of marriage, before she preceded him in death on November 8, 2005. Together they raised eight children. His entire loving family was one of his greatest accomplishments that he was always so proud of.
Mr. Jarvi was a member of St Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee. In earlier years, he liked to hunt, fish & trap, traveling with his family, reading, berry picking and woodworking.
Surviving are his children: Kathleen (Larry) Peterson of Negaunee, David (Ann) Jarvi of Ishpeming, Michael (Marsha) Jarvi of Negaunee, Nancy (James) Skewis of Negaunee, Cynthia (Philip) Johnson of Negaunee, James (Sheila) Jarvi of Richmond Township, Jeffrey (Lora) Jarvi of Westland, MI and his son-in-law Paul (Sue) Smith of Negaunee; 28 grandchildren: Darren, David (Amy) & Robert Smith, Jill (Robert) Faleafine, Jane (Duane) Cotterman, Daniel, Jon (Lois) Carlson, Jennifer (Charles) Scott, Raegen, Jaesen (Jamie) & Johannah Peterson, Jody (Brian) Young, Jamie (Darin) Hooper, Shelley (Dean) Stetson, Angela (Geoffrey) Kruger, Eric, Ryan & Christine Jarvi, Andrew & Jessica Skewis, Emily (David) Rushford, Elizabeth & Jolee Johnson, Jack (Crystal), Brian & Kaylea Jarvi, David & Ava Jarvi; 33 great-grandchildren: Jordan, Drue & Stephanie Smith, Kayla & Robert Jr. Faleafine, Rachel & Rylee Gustafson, Lily Cotterman, Jeffrey & Jack Carlson, Jonathon, Danielle, Rebekah, Laura, Maeganne & Matthew Scott, Hunter, Jarrett & Bailey Peterson, Alexxa, Samantha & Olivia Young, Sophie & Isaac Hooper, Noah, Chloe, Sadie & Audrey Stetson, Clara Kruger, Hannah & Matthew Skewis, Jacob Rushford, Jack James Jarvi; 2 sisters: E. Marie Gischia and V. Katherine Jarvi; 1 sister-in-law: Dorothy Jarvi and numerous nieces & nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Betty, his daughter Lynnette M. Smith, his brother Leo Jarvi and 2 sisters, Ellen Samuelson and Hannah Kallioinen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Thursday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Negaunee, with Monsignor Peter Oberto officiating. Burial will be in the Negaunee Cemetery. Mr. Jarvi’s grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Relatives & friends may call at the Koskey Funeral Home from 6:00pm until 8:00 pm on Wednesday. A parish prayer service will be held there at 8 PM..
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Negaunee Senior Center.
