Donald Henry Garbers was born October 25, 1925 to Henry and Bessie (Grant) Garbers in Fraser Township, Martin County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church in Welcome. Donald was a 1943 graduate of Welcome High School. On December 12, 1945 he entered the United States Army serving until his honorable discharge on December 2, 1946. On November 18, 1958 he was united in marriage to Mary Maday at St. John Vianney Rectory in Fairmont, Minnesota. After their marriage they farmed in Fraser Township until moving into Welcome. Donald was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he at one time served as treasurer and President. He also belonged to the Farm Bureau for many years, served on the Welcome School Board, Fraser Township Board, Welcome Historical Society, and drove school bus for the Welcome School District. He greatly enjoyed playing cards and being with his family and friends. Donald died on Friday morning, August 22, 2008 at Lakeview Methodist Health Care Center in Fairmont, Minnesota at the age of eighty two years. Survivors include his wife, Mary Garbers of Welcome, Minnesota; son, John Garbers and wife, Rita, of rural Welcome, Minnesota and daughter, Ann Maslakow and husband, Kevin, of Mapleton, Minnnesota; four grandchildren, Krista and Shawna Garbers and Alex and Sara Maslakow; sister, Mary Lou Buckmeier and husband, Floyd, of Fairmont, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Eileen Sager of Welcome, Minnesota; brothers-in-law, Louis Maday and wife, Marvis, of Fairmont, Minnesota, James Maday and wife, Terry, of Fairfield, California, Larry Maday and wife, Emily, of Penn Valley, California; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, father and mother-in-law, Joe and Anna Maday; brothers-in-law, Harold Maday, Donald Maday and wife, Grace, LeRoy Sager and sister-in-law, Lillian Maday and other relatives. Interment will be in the Welcome City Cemetery in Welcome, Minnesota.
