| | | Howard Duane Nelson was born on June 21, 1930 to Earl and Ethel (Mortenson) Nelson in St. James, Minnesota. He was baptized and later confirmed at West Sveadahl Lutheran Church in rural St. James. Howard received his education in country school in Watonwan County. On April 21, 1953 he entered the United States Army serving until his honorable discharge on April 9, 1955. He returned to farm with his father in rural St. James. On September 3, 1953, he was united in marriage to Elaine Heppner at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. James , Minnesota. After their marriage they farm in Long Lake Township until moving into St. James. Howard was a member of Kansas Lake Lutheran Church, where he was currently President and served on it’s Cemetery Board. He was a member of the Ormsby Farmers Grain Board, South Central Cattleman’s Association where at one time was the President. Howard greatly enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, duck, goose and pheasant hunting, driving around the area and looking at the crops while listening to Yankton, South Dakota radio station.
On Saturday, April 4, 2009, Howard died at his home in St. James, Minnesota at the age of Seventy-eight years.
Howard is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elaine Nelson of St. James, Minnesota; four children, Cindy Bolte and husband, Rev. Alan Bolte of Alexandria, Minnesota, Lori Ann Nelson of Fairmont, Minnesota, Craig Nelson and wife, Kim, of St. James, Minnesota, Mark Nelson and wife, Trish of St. James, Minnesota; five grandchildren, Chris Bolte and fiancée, Tricia of Blue Ash, Ohio, Melissa Hubbard of Seaman, Ohio, David Nelson and wife, Courtney of Springfield, Minnesota, Heather and Michaela Nelson both of St. James, Minnesota, four great-grandchildren, Dylan Bolte, Alexis, Ashley and Abigail Hubbard; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Wilth and husband, Joe, of St. James, Minnesota and Lois Bean and husband, Lynn of Nampa, Idaho; nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, friends, and his morning coffee friends at McDonalds.
Howard is preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Sadie Jo Nelson; sister, Donna Meyer; mother and father-in-law, John and Leona Heppner and other relatives and friends.
Howard’s family prefers memorials to the Ronald McDonald House and or the Kansas Lake Cemetery Association.
Burial will be in Kansas Lake Lutheran Cemetery, rural Butterfield, Minnesota with full military honors by the St. James Honor Guard.
