| | | Norman Elmer Schaefer was born on February 3, 1920 to Fred and Lillie (Heinrich) Schaefer on a farm in Fox Lake Township, Martin County, Minnesota. He attended country school and then attended Sherburn Public School. Norman helped on the farm and farmed with horses. On June 29, 1941 , he was united in marriage to Ruth Weiss at Granada, Minnesota. On February 3, 1942 he entered the United States Army-Air Corp serving until his honorable discharge on October 17, 1945. They lived and farmed in the Webster-Siren, Wisconsin area until moving to a farm in Elm Creek Township, rural Sherburn. They later moved to a farm in Galena Township and then to a farm in Fraser Township, rural Welcome until 1980 when they retired and moved to their home northeast of Welcome. Ruth died on October 4, 1996. Norman later made his home at Temperance Lake Ridge Assisted Living in Sherburn, the Roxanne House in Fairmont and most recently at Golden Living Center in Franklin. Norman was very involved with NFO, (National Farmers Organization where he served at one time as county chairman. He also was employed at the Hog Buying Station in Welcome, Welcome Camp Ground, Jim Hill Sprayers and as a janitor at the Welcome School. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Welcome, the Sherburn Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8261 of Sherburn and the Welcome American Legion Post #553. He greatly enjoyed working in his garden and going up town for coffee.
On Saturday evening, June 13, 2009, Norman died at Golden Living Center in Franklin, Minnesota at the age of eighty-nine years.
Survivors include his three children, Sandra Holm and her husband, Morris of Swea City, Iowa, Nina Schaefer of Sherburn, Minnesota and John W. Schaefer of rural Welcome, Minnesota; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; two brothers, David Schaefer and his wife, Ruth of Baxter, Minnesota and Lloyd Schaefer and his wife, Mitzi of Green Forest, Arkansas; sister, Juanita Hawbaker and her husband, David of Lebanon, Kentucky; sister-in-law, Mary Mulso of Sherburn, Minnesota; several nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Norman is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Ruth; daughter-in-law, Mary Kay Schaefer; great-grandson, Jacob Holm; brothers, Richard, Henry, Ervin, Don and Carl Schaefer; sister, Sylva Kienitz other relatives and friends.
Interment will be in Faiview Memorial Park in Fairmont, Minnesota with full military honors.
