Lon Jay Gripentrog was born on April 20, 1958 to Warren and Julane (Jorgensen) Gripentrog at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa. He was baptized and later confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dunnell, Minnesota. He graduated from Sherburn-Dunnell High School in 1976. Lon attended Jackson Vocational School and then was employed at Glasstite in Dunnell and later at Cargill in Alpha. On September 25, 1982 , he was united in marriage to Mary Finn at Chatfield, Minnesota. After their marriage they lived in Sioux Falls where Lon was employed in Real Estate and most recently, as a Credit Analyst for Citibank. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. In his earlier years, he enjoyed car racing, golfing,and participating in karate. Lon was a Boy Scout leader, soccer coach,and assisted with the marching band at Lincoln High School in Sioux Falls. Along with his family, they enjoyed boating at Okoboji, Iowa.

Lon died on Saturday morning, June 27, 2009 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls,South Dakota.

Survivors include his wife, Mary of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; daughter, Elizabeth Gripentrog and fiancé, Matt Sauer of Sioux Falls, son, Brett Gripentrog and special friend, Mandy Lee of Sioux Falls; grandson, Brody Gripentrog; his mother, Julane Gripentrog of rural Dunnell, Minnesota; brother, Rick Gripentrog of Minneapolis, Minnesota; sister, Rita Martin and Gaylord, of Madison Lake, Minnesota; Father and mother-in-law, Roy and Shirley Finn of Stewartville, Minnesota; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jerry and Nancy Finn of Stewartville, Eileen Finn of Detroit, Michigan, Duane and Karen Finn of Oronoco, Minnesota, Shari and Tony Weber of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; several nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

Lon is preceded in death by his father, Warren Gripentrog; maternal grandparents, Frank and Luella Jorgensen; paternal grandparents, Fritz and Elsie Gripentrog

In Lieu of flowers Lon’s family would prefer memorials sent to the charity of your choice.

There will be a Service of Remembrance at 7:00p.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church, #1400 South Duluth Avenue, Sioux Falls,South Dakota by Pastor Vernon Schindler.
