  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Erik Jon McKee

Erik Jon McKee was born in Kansas City, Missouri on August 3, 1944 and became the adoptive son of Lloyd and Florence McKee. He spent his early years in Carson, Iowa living with his family in the McKee Funeral Home, hunting, fishing, playing the trumpet, basketball and football. In 1962 he graduated from Carson High School. He went to the University of Iowa where he received a B.S. in Zoology and then to the University of Kansas where he received a degree in Mortuary Science.

In 1966 he married Joan Eitmann and two daughters were born to this union, Ellen and Kerri.

Erik worked as a funeral director in Omaha, Greenfield, and Winterset before purchasing the funeral homes in Dexter and Earlham in 1973 which he operated for nearly ten years. He then purchased an interest in Des Moines-Winterset Monument Company and worked as a memorial counselor until his health forced retirement in August. Professionalism, work ethic, and a belief that every family he worked with deserved compassion, kindness, and excellent services describe his work life.

Service to others was Erik’s guiding principal. As a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church and served his Lord in many capacities including years as an elder and Congregational President. In addition, he was a member of the first Dexter Rescue team and went on to serve on Earlham Rescue for over 20 years. He served both the Dexfield and Earlham school systems on various committees and was a member of the Dexfield School Board. He was the current president of Earlham Pioneer Place Board and served on several other county and local community committees.

Erik was passionate about life. He loved his family and their annual trips to the beach, the Iowa Hawkeyes, and spending time with his many friends.

He is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter Ellen Wilwerding (Craig) of Peachtree City, GA; daughter Kerri Walker (Scott) of Kansas City, MO; granddaughters Lauren and Hannah Walker; grandson Grant Wilwerding; two brothers, Tom McKee (Carol) of Omaha, NE and Bob Lembke (Cathy) of Gretna, NE; two sisters, LuCinda Goos (Wayne) of Ankeny and Chris Klein (Larry) of Pella; one sister-in-law Sharon Jacobson (Robert) of Story City; and mother-in-law Twila Eitmann of Earlham.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Florence McKee, step-mother Iris McKee Gilpin, and niece Melissa Jacobson Petersen.
