  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Donna Lee Smith
Donna Lee Smith was born the daughter of Ralph and Velma (Marion) Sloan in Dexter, Iowa on July 31, 1941 and died at her home in Earlham on January 17, 2009 following a brief battle with cancer. She was 67 years, 5 months and 17 days of age.
Donna graduated from the Earlham High School in 1959. She and Willis Smith were married at All Saints Catholic Church in Stuart, Iowa on October 24, 1959. This union was blessed with three children: Cindy, Shelley and Mark. Donna was a farm wife and also worked as a secretary for the Vance and Hochstetler Engineering Firm in Winterset. Following Willis’s death in 1986, Donna lived on the farm until 1993 when she moved into Winterset. In August of 2007, Donna moved back to Earlham. As a young girl Donna was very active in sports, playing tennis and basketball. She spent many hours watching her children and grandchildren playing sports at school and loved to watch sports on television. Donna enjoyed fishing and playing poker. She and Willis loved to dance and were fond of the “jitterbug”. She was a Hawkeye fan and enjoyed spending time with her family. Donna loved the color red and enjoyed watching red cardinal birds. She never missed the monthly outings with her brothers and sister at local restaurants, often ordering steak as her favorite meal. Donna really enjoyed visiting with her friends and neighbors at Madison Manor and all the “potlucks” they shared.
Donna leaves the following family to celebrate her life: daughter Cindy Villotti of Earlham; daughter Shelley Weeks and husband Bob of Winterset; son Mark Smith and wife Julie of Winterset; 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; sister Carolyn Mitchell of Des Moines; brothers Larry Sloan and wife Jan of Madrid and Bob Sloan of Adel; 16 nieces and nephews as well as numerous friends, and her constant companion “Toby”, a Pomeranian, was her best friend.
Memorials may be directed to Middle River Hospice or the Madison County Memorial Hospital.

To Those I Love
And Those That Love Me

When I am gone, release me. Let me go.
You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears
Be thankful for our many beautiful years.
I gave you my love, you can only guess
How much you gave me in happiness.
I thank you for the love you each have shown,
But now it’s time I traveled on alone.
So grieve a while for me, if grieve you must.
Then let your grief be comforted by trust.
It’s only for a time that we must part;
So bless the memories within your heart.
I won’t be far away, for life goes on.
So if you need me, call and I will come.
Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near.
And if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear,
All my love around you soft and clear.
And then, when you must come this way alone,
I’ll greet you with a smile and say, “Welcome home.”
