| | | Hazel Clemence, daughter of the late James Irving and Hettie Mae (Fails) Woolley, was born March 6, 1915, on the family farm in Woods County, Oklahoma, and passed away January 13, 2005, at her home in Waynoka, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years, 10 months, and 7 days.
Hazel attended the Cottonwood School northwest of Waynoka. On November 21, 1931, she was united in marriage to Paul Edward Clemence at the County Courthouse in Alva. They worked together on the farm northwest of Waynoka until they moved to Elk Horn in 1950. After Paul passed away in 1970, she moved to Alva where she worked as a babysitter, at E. P. Clapper Memorial Hospital, Sims Gems and the Waynoka Library until her retirement. She was well known as a seamstress, doing sewing work for many people and sewing many dresses for her granddaughters.
Hazel was a faithful servant of God throughout her life. She started the West Liberty Sunday school with the help of Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Murrow. She also helped start a class at Lookout when she and Paul ran the Elk Horn Store. She was a member of the Waynoka Church of God where she taught Sunday School for many years. When she could no longer serve God in the church, she taught, comforted, and prayed for her family and friends. Her family depended on her prayers all of the time.
Her favorite things were her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. There were probably not very many that knew her by her name, it was always ?Gram?. She touched may lives.
