Frederick John Brown, son of the late Joseph Albert and Edna Helen (Hood) Brown, was born March 3, 1910, on a farm west of Alva in Woods County, Oklahoma, and passed away June 27, 2005, at his daughter’s home in Alva, at the age of 95 years, 3 months, and 25, days.

Fred attended school at Mt. Vernon. On August 22, 1932, he was united in marriage to Frances Ila Lyon by Rev. Maggie Hull at her home in Alva. They lived on the farm west of Alva where he farmed and traded cattle. The rock house in which he was born is still standing west of Alva. He loved livestock, farming and John Deere tractors.

Working for the WPA at the prevailing wage of 30 cents per hour, he helped lay the blacktop on Highway 64 from Plainview to Alva and assisted with building bridges on the old Cora road. In 1947, he and his family survived a tornado which struck their farm and destroyed their home.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Frank Brown; and two sisters, Marian Bloyd and Geraldine Pittman.

Fred is survived by his wife, Frances, of Alva, two daughters, Betty Lou Brown of Alva and Shirley Ann Smith of Ponca City; two grandchildren, Mark Smith of Alva and Darin Smith and his wife, Julie, of Norman; four great grandchildren, Johnathon Smith of Ponca City, Dillon Smith and Shelby Smith of Alva, and Lauren Smith of Norman; three nephews, Stanley Pittman, Jimmie Pittman, and Jack Brown, of the local area; several nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Alva Church of the Nazarene.
