  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Vernon Bush, son of the late Roger Price and Mae (Dyer) Bush, was born July 3, 1919, near Aetna, Kansas, and passed away August 5, 2005, at his home in Alva, Oklahoma, at the age of 86 years, 1 month, and 2 days.

When Vernon was an infant, the family moved to the home place in the Yellowstone Community. Vernon attended several rural schools including Kingman and Sunshine. He graduated from Farry High School in 1938. The following two years he attended Northwestern State Teachers College.

During World War II, Vernon trucked produce to B & B Grocery and others, including the Barton Fruit Company in Enid. His trucking took him to several states and provided many astute observations and interesting experiences which he enjoyed relating to friends and relatives.

On April 28, 1946, he was united in marriage to Bertha Hadley Davidson at Alva, Oklahoma. No children were born of this union, but they were blessed with many friends and relatives who cared for them, especially Ron Bush and Tom and Howard Nighswonger, who were like sons to him.

Vernon and his brother, Duane had an earth moving business. The job he was most proud of was the foundation dirt work for the large grain elevator in Enid, Oklahoma. Then in 1950, he and Duane began a custom harvesting business that continued for 30 years. With Bert’s help they harvested wheat and milo from Texas to North Dakota, enabling them to make many enduring friendships along the way. He was engaged in farming and ranching until he retired in 2004.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Alva Elks Lodge. He enjoyed taking his Cocker Spaniels, Snuffy and Pepper, hunting and fishing and just walking among the fields on his farm. He also greatly enjoyed his two cats, Pinky and Frisky. Many nephews and neighbor’s sons benefitted from Vernon’s tutelage. It always delighted him when these men, grown from boys, visited him later in life.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Rudy Bush, Roger Bush, Jr. and Crozier Bush; and one sister, Doris Parsons.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Bertha, of Alva; one brother, Duane Bush and his wife, Marian, of Isabel, Kansas; one sister, Margaret Taylor of Wichita, Kansas; other relatives and many friends.

There will be a visitation at his home at 1021 2nd Street in Alva from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 7, 2005. The casket will be present during visitation.

Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2005, at the Alva Municipal Cemetery with Dr. Greg Hook, pastor of the Alva First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment is under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Vernon Bush Scholarship at The First Baptist Church.
