Thomas Everett Buckland, son of the Edward E. and Josie (Vaughn) Buckland, was born September 4, 1909, at the homestead three miles southeast of Old Fair Valley, in Woods County, Oklahoma, and passed away August 27, 2005, at Share Convalescent Home in Alva, Oklahoma, at the age of 95 years, 11 months, and 23 days. He was cremated at his request.

In the spring of 1920 the Bucklands moved to a farm 1 mile east and 5 miles north of Waynoka, Oklahoma, where he attended Bethel School. He graduated from the eighth grade at Bethel School, and from Waynoka High School with the Class of 1928.

Everett talked about playing baseball with his dad and brothers. Everett’s family liked to have family and friends over for meals and they also enjoyed playing games, especially the card game, Pitch.

He started farming with his father in 1926 on land east of their home place. Sometimes, while plowing behind the horse, he would turn up army guns, belt buckles and arrowheads. He continued to farm with his dad until 1930 when Everett moved back to farm the Fair Valley place.

On September 9, 1932, Everett was united in marriage to Edna Bixler. In the spring of 1934 they purchased a farm 7 miles northeast of Waynoka. He was a member of the Avard Christian Church. He was also involved in many school and community activities, including helping with PTA, 4-H, FFA, Memorial Hill Cemetery, and the Rural Water District. He also served on the Waynoka Board of Education and the First State Bank Board.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lenore J. Ferguson; two brothers, Raymond Buckland and Jeff Elrod; six sisters, Vera Devine, Ruth Hotchkiss, Nora Conquest, Edith Greer, Jessie DeVilbiss, and Lela Harold; and one granddaughter, Joy Ferguson.

Everett is survived by his wife, Edna, of Alva; two sons, Lynn Buckland and his wife, Deanna, of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and Phil Buckland and his wife, Sally, of Empire, Colorado; one brother, Paul Buckland of Waynoka; seven grandchildren, Brenda Borders, Dana Ferguson, Marty Ferguson, VaLynda Porter, Ron Buckland, Mark Buckland, and Brian Buckland; eight great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

Memorial services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, September 4, 2005, at the Avard Christian Church with Reverend Aaron Nutter officiating. Services are under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Waynoka.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Memorial Hill Cemetery.
