| | | Funeral services for Fern Smiley will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2009, at the Waynoka First Baptist Church with Rev. David Shaw officiating. Interment will be in the Waynoka Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Waynoka, LLC.
Fern Smiley, daughter of the late Alven and Alice (Linville) Edwards, was born June 12, 1919, at Cheyenne Valley, Oklahoma, and passed away September 24, 2009, at Waynoka, Oklahoma, at the age of 90 years, 3 months, and 12 days.
After graduating from Cheyenne Valley High School, Fern attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University. On April 15, 1940, she was united in marriage to Don Russell Smiley at Ringwood. They lived their entire life in Waynoka.
Fern worked at Frank’s Department Store for about 20 years and also at Converse’s Grocery.
She was an active member of the Waynoka First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School. She was also a member of the Women’s Federated Club, the Waynoka Saddle Club, and the Waynoka Senior Citizen’s Center. She also volunteered at the Waynoka Library. She enjoyed raising flowers, collecting antiques, and reading.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Don; one son, Phillip Smiley; three siblings, Forrest Edwards and twins, Floyd Edwards and June McAlpin.
Fern is survived by two sons, Sidney Smiley and wife, Doris, of Waynoka, and Stephen Smiley and wife, Pat, of Waynoka; six grandchildren, Dawn Rae Doss and husband, Chris, of Amarillo, Texas, Dana Ann Courtney of Cleburne, Texas, John David Smiley and wife, Nita, of Waynoka, Scott Smiley of Waynoka, Meranda Porter and husband, Chris, of Waynoka, and Becky Ross and husband, Nathan, of Waynoka; 13 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Waynoka Library or the Waynoka Nursing Home Activity Fund.
