Roderick A. Nixon
Roderick A. Nixon, age 80, of West Main Street, Westfield, NY, a member of an early Westfield family and prominent in the independent telephone industry since 1946, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 in St. Vincent Health Center, Erie, PA.
He was born in Jamestown, NY on November 12, 1924, the youngest son of the late Samuel F. and Marion (Hequenburg) Nixon and lived his entire life in Westfield. Mr. Nixon had been President and Treasurer of the Chautauqua and Erie Telephone Corp. until his retirement on August 1, 1997, having been employed for 50 yrs. in the company founded by his grandfather, S. Fred Nixon in 1897. the company was the oldest family owned independent telephone company in the United States. He attended Manlius Military Academy where he was Captain of his Company, graduated from Ashville School, North Carolina and attended Union College, Schenectady, NY.
His industry accomplishments include serving as Director and Treasurer of the NYS Telephone Assoc. and a Director of the Dunkirk and Fredonia Telephone Corp., and President of the Cassadaga Telephone Corp.
His civic responsibilities included serving as a Director of the Westfield Memorial Hospital, Chamber of Commerce and the former Westfield YMCA.
A life long Presbyterian, he served the Westfield Presbyterian Church as an elder, deacon, and former President of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Nixon's avocation was a commitment to the understanding of local and county history. His positions included serving as President of the Chautauqua County Historical Society and as Director and Treasurer. He gave many years of service and financial support to this organization which his father and grandfather had likewise been associated with. His interests were Westfield history and he was involved in the publication of a number of books including that of the Chautauqua County Historical Society publication "Telling Our Stories" published in 2002.
Survivors include his wife, Priscilla B. Nixon who he married on March 19, 1961 in Jamestown, NY, his son, Mark S. Nixon of Denver, CO, and his daughter, Emelie C. Nixon of Boston, MA, as well as his sister, Constance N. Wagar of Schenectady, NY
He was preceded in death by his father, Samuel F. Nixon, and his mother, Marion (Hequenburg) Nixon, and his two brothers; S. Frederick Nixon and Alastair Nixon.
Visitation will not be observed
Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 19, 2005 at 11:00 A.M. at First Presbyterian Church and Society of Westfield.
Rev. Dr. Arthur D. Webster of First Presbyterian Church and Society of Westfield and Rev. Dr. Alexander Holmes will be officiating. A private family burial will be in the Westfield Cemetery.
