Warren, Ohio- George Ernest Cullen, 79, formerly of Westfield, NY, died peacefully Friday April 22, 2005 at The Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home in Howland, Ohio.
He was born December 5, 1925 in Dunkirk, NY, the son of George and Annie (Haigh) Cullen. He was a lifetime educator, having been employed as an elementary teacher and assistant principal at Amherst and Eggertsville Schools, an assistant professor at Buffalo State Teachers College in Buffalo, and finally, an elementary school principal at Westfield Academy and Central School in Westfield, NY, from which he retired in 1984.
“Ernie”, as his friends knew him, was a former member of the 1st Presbyterian Church and Society of Westfield where he served on the session, sang in the choir for 19 years, and was active in the men’s club. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts for 30 years, having achieved the honor of Eagle Scout in his youth. He was a 2-term president of the Chautauqua North Retired Teacher’s Association and held other offices in the organization for 8 years. He also served as an officer and member of the Board of Directors of the Chautauqua Alliance for the Mentally Ill. During WWII, he served overseas in Germany in the Army of Occupation.
Ernie enjoyed many hobbies including coin and stamp collecting, playing the trumpet and piano, and corresponding with friends and relatives.
Ernie is survived by his sons, Brian F. Cullen of Akron, Ohio and Wayne M. Cullen of Burlington, NC, daughter Amy H. Burd of Warren, Ohio and 5 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen E. Cullen and son Gary R. Cullen, and his sister Dorothy Harlan.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at 11:00 AM at the 1st Presbyterian Church and Society on Portage St. in Westfield with the Rev. Dr. Arthur Webster officiating.
The family will be present to meet with friends at the church after the service.
Internment to follow at the Westfield Cemetery.
The family gratefully declines flowers and suggests contributions be made to the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) of Chautauqua County at 16 East Terrace Ave., Lakewood, NY 14750.
