GOUVERNEUR- Mr. James Lee Mason, age 78, of Rowley St., Gouverneur, died Wednesday afternoon, June 22, 2005 at home with his sons by his side following a year long battle with Cancer.
He was born in Watertown, NY on April 29, 1927 the son of the late James Leo and Louise (Fenwick) Mason. He had been a Gouverneur resident all his life. He was a Graduate of Gouverneur High School and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Lawrence University where he was a member of the Sigma Chi and Gamma Omega Fraternities. He then did post graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin at Madison where he studied Employee Relations and Time Study Management. He had been employed by Bastian Brothers Co. of Rochester, NY and retired in 1986 from Josten’s Inc. as a Regional Sales Manager after over 36 years of selling scholastic products to northern New York Schools. While with Josten’s he enjoyed a distinguished sales career being inducted into the company’s Turquoise Club, a top honor for it’s sales team. He was commonly known to students and faculties as “The Ring Man”. He was a Veteran of the US Navy during WW II serving in the Pacific theater attaining the rank of Seaman 1st Class.
He was a member of St. James Roman Catholic Church of Gouverneur where he had been active in earlier years as Parish Trustee and Parish Council Member. He was active on the Board of Directors of the Gouverneur Museum. He was a member of the of the St. Lawrence County Historical Assoc. And was a former member of their Board of Directors. He was a member of the Gouverneur Foundation Board of Directors and a member of the Gouverneur Lions Club.
He had also been active in Gouverneur Village affairs holding the office of Village Trustee and former member of the Gouverneur Village Zoning Board of Appeals. He enjoyed antiques.
Survivors include his two sons; James F. Mason and his wife Jean of Birdsboro, PA, and S. Scott Mason and his wife Debbie of Westfield, NY. Also survived by his 4 grandchildren; James and Rebecca of Birdsboro, PA and Amanda and Katlyn of Westfield, NY.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 yrs., Patricia (Constantikes) Mason who died on August 26, 2003.
Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, Inc., 33 Park St., Gouverneur, NY on Sunday, evening June 26, 2005 from 6 - 8 PM and are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on Monday morning at 11 AM at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Main St., Gouverneur, NY.
Interment in New St. James Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to: Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, PO BOX 469, Potsdam, NY 13676.
