| | | WESTFIELD-Andrew J. Altwies, age 91, of East Main Rd, Westfield, died Friday, June 30, 2006 at The Chautauqua County Home and Infirmary, Dunkirk.
Mr. Altwies was born September 13, 1914 at Dunkirk, NY the son of the late Henry and Theresa (Menner) Altwies. He married Myrtle Hollander on June 8,1946 at Sacred Heart Church.
A northern Chautauqua County resident all his life, he had been been employed by the former Boston Store and ALCO. In 1963 he and his wife moved to Portland and owned and operated Andy´s Superette for 10 years. In 1973 he moved to Westfield and was employed by Renold, Inc. until his retirement in 1979. Andy had been a director of the former Brocton Savings and Loan Assoc., and was a former member of the St. Vincent dePaul Society and the Knights of St. John. A WW II Veteran, he attained the rank of Sargeant with the 3rd Army Half-track Supply in the European theater. He continued his membership in the 778th Battalion Assoc. of the 3rd Army. He was also a member of the Portland Vol. Firemans Exempt Assoc. and a member of St. Columbia Retreat League.
Mr. Altwies was a member of St. James Major Roman Catholic Church, The Loyal Order Of Moose Lodge # 118, a life member of the Wm. P. Jackway Post 6764 VFW,and a 50 plus year member of the John W. Rogers Post 327 American Legion all of Westfield.
He is survived by his wife: Myrtle (Hollander) Altwies, his daughter and son in law: Joan and Jeffrey DuChaine of Westfield, NY , his son: Thomas Altwies of St. Louis, MO, his Grandson, Chad Altwies of Portland, NY, His sister: Margaret A. Rosing of Dunkirk, NY, his Daughter-in-law, Terri Altwies of Westfield, NY, as well as several Nieces and Nephews;
Besides his parents he was predeceased by his brothers, Henry and Edward Altwies, his half brother, Anthony Schrantz, and his sister, Mary Hayes.
No visitation will be observed. The Funeral Mass will be Wednesday at 11:00 at St. James Major Roman Catholic Church, 15 Union Street, Westfield with by Fr. Michael Parker, Celebrant.
Private burial will be in St. James Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Fire Department Of Westfield Memorial Fund, 23 Elm Street, or to St. James Major RC Church, 15 Union Street, both of Westfield, NY 14787.
