Robert V. Bennett, Sr., 82, of Bettendorf, died Sunday, June 4, 2006 at Pathway Hospice at Terrace Park, Bettendorf.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, June 7, 2006 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church, Davenport. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Tuesday at McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home, Bettendorf. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 6:30 P.M. on Tuesday evening. Burial with military honors conducted by Moline American Legion Post 246 will be held at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials may be made to Gilda’s Club or Trinity Pathway Hospice.
Robert was born May 29, 1924 in El Paso, Illinois, the son of Ross & Ruth (Harvey) Bennett. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1945. Robert was united in marriage to Beatrice Akridge on September 6, 1958 in Chicago, Illinois. She preceded him in death in May of 1987.
Robert was employed as an ironworker, and he was a member of Ironworkers Local 111 in Rock Island and Local 46 in Springfield, Illinois.
Additionally, he was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and Retired Ironworkers.
Those left to honor his memory include his son, Robert Bennett, Jr., and his wife, Claudia, of Simpsonville, South Carolina; his step-son, Stephen England, and his wife, Peggy, of St. Louis, Missouri; his grandchildren, Eric Bennett, Brian Bennett, Peter England, and Stephen England; his great-granddaughter, Camden Bennett; his sister, Rosemary Wolf of Forsyth, Illinois; and his brother, Kenny Bennett, of Billings, Montana.
In addition to his wife, Bea, Robert was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard, Donald, Gene and Buddy.
