William F. “Bill” Schurr, 84, a resident of LeClaire, Iowa died on Sunday, October 25, 2009 at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa following a brief illness.
His funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pleasant Valley, Iowa. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, LeClaire. Visitation will be from 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. and 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at the McGinnis-Chambers Funeral Home of Bettendorf and for one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, the Buffalo Bill Museum, the LeClaire Public Library, the Bettendorf Fire Department or the LeClaire Volunteer Fire Department.
Bill was born October 13, 1925 in LeClaire, the son of Frank & Lillian (Buhman) Schurr. He graduated from LeClaire High School and served in the U.S. Army spending one and one-half years in Japan.
He farmed on a fourth generation farm located outside of LeClaire for 64 years. Bill currently served as LeClaire Township Trustee and as a director of the Mississippi Valley Fair where he received the Distinguished Service Award. He was a 40-year member of the Pleasant Valley Volunteer Fire Department. Bill previously served as a director of the Eldridge Cooperative, president of the Scott County Cattlemen’s Association, director of the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association and president of the Scott County 4-H Youth Committee. In addition he served as president of the Iowa Flying Farmers and was a council member of Trinity Lutheran Church. His memberships include the International Flying Farmers, the Scott County Farm Bureau, Trinity Lutheran Church and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. In addition, Bill made many trips to Reynosa, Mexico doing mission work.
He loved farming, flying, traveling, family, friends, dogs and anything chocolate.
Bill married Lois Geest in Davenport, Iowa in March of 1954 and had three daughters, Debra Bemis (Brian Adamson) of Elburn, Illinois, Diane (Ron) Noll of New London, Iowa and Denise (Bruce) Hoover of Decatur, Illinois; and a son, Dan (Karen) Schurr of LeClaire; 12 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
His sister, Joanne (Schurr) Zelle and his parents preceded Bill in death.
