Richard Skocko
Dick was born to John and Louise Skocko on September 28, 1932 in Freedom, CA. His grandmother and midwife Mary Skocko delivered the whopping 12 pound (baby?) boy. Dick attended Watsonville High School where he met his wife Winona (Nona) Joan Cox.
While in high school Scotty was a four sport performer, playing football, basketball, baseball and was a member of the track team. Dick received many honors for his football talents and in l950 placed second in the state meet discus competition. He attended USC and was on the football and track team. Dick joined the Navy in l952 and served two years before being honorably discharged. And, yes, he played football and competed on the track team. Dick and Nona were married in l953 and lived in San Diego before returning to Watsonville to settle. In l954 he was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. Dick played semi-pro football for the Salinas Packers.
Dick started his career with Pacific Bell in l955 as a lineman. In the early days the line crew would dig the telephone pole holes by hand and climb the poles with their gaffs. Lift truck? We don’t need no stinking lift truck! By the time he retired in l987 he was a subway inspector. One of Dick’s proudest accomplishments was the replacement of all the telephone lines on the Water Street bridge after the flood of l982. In 2006 Dick came out of retirement and worked with his life-long friend Nick Korach delivering water storage tanks for Green Rubber Kennedy.
Dick was one of the best clammers in the area, always limiting out. You always knew where to find him: the furthest clammer out, bobbing neck high in the surf dragging his rake. One of his many passions was fishing. Dick was known to drive other perch fisherman crazy when he would release his smaller fish to catch another day. His fishing expeditions took him to the Sierras, the Delta, the Colorado River, Monterey Bay, Cabo and Eagle Lake. Scotty would spend up to five weeks year fishing for the elusive Eagle Lake trout with his friend Wayne Clough. His prize catches were a 180 pound marlin caught south of the border and a 40 pound striper caught in the Delta and displayed in his garage. Dick also coached Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football.
He was an avid gambler taking frequent trips to Las Vegas, Reno, Laughlin and Lake Tahoe with his friends from Gamblers Express. Gardening was another one of his loves. He was well known for growing and canning Croatian peppers, whose seeds were brought over from the Old Country by his father’s great-uncle. He kept his neighbors and friends well stocked with a bounty of vegetables throughout the growing season.
Dick was a very generous man, hosting Christmas Eve parties where everyone received a gift and a spread that would make a casino buffet blush with envy. He also barbecued for many events including the Spring Lamb, the Father Kelley Tournament and the annual Marmo’s Pinot Lake birthday party.
Baca traveled all over California and Nevada supporting his granddaughters in their sporting events. He was known as Baca to the girls’ team members and families.
Christmas and birthdays were a special time for Baca as he cherished taking his “girls”shopping for anything they wanted and then to lunch.
Unique, special, generous, loving, caring and an absolute stud! Dick passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and friends on Monday, November 9th.
God Bless you Dad-Dick-Scotty-Baca. We love you. Dick’s family members include Son Mike, his wife Sue and daughter Noel of Rancho San Diego; son Jeff, wife Mary and daughters Jamie and Kayce,; #3 son Gary Albo and #4 son Joe
