Houghton
Waino “Pat” Tulikangas, 96, a resident of Houghton, passed away Saturday March 28, 2009, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock where he had been a patient for over the past 2 weeks.
He was born on December 20, 1912, on the family farm in Pelkie, where he remained until the age of 32. He was the son of the late Herman and Helena (Bjorn) Tulikangas. As a child, Waino attended the Hamar School in Pelkie. Mr. Tulikangas later moved to Houghton to make his home.
On April 15, 1944, he was united in marriage to the former Jennie Wertanen with whom he shared 54 wonderful years, and on December 27, 1997, she preceded him in death.
Mr. Tulikangas was later employed for a short time in a saw mill and at the Freda Mill. He then was became a Satr Route Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years and also worked part time for Copper Country Dairy for over 27 years.
Waino was a faithful member of Maranatha Free Lutheran Church of Houghton. He enjoyed working in his garden, working on projects at home and collecting coins. Waino was loved by many throughout the Copper country for his kindness, his warm smile, and his sense of humor. Waino’s cat Oskar has provided steady companion ship for the past 9 years.
Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents, 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

Carolyn, Hans, Megan, Emily, Paul, Owen, Nick, & Lauren
His great-grandchildren:
Trenton, Quenton, Keith (K.C.), & Shelby
Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins
His feline companion Oskar
Funeral services for Waino will be held 11 am Friday April 3, 2009, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock with Pastor Dean Franz to officiate. Spring burial will be held in the Forest Hill Cemetery of Houghton.
Friends may call on Thursday April 2, 2009 at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock from 5 to 8 pm. and on Friday from 10 am until time of services at the funeral home.
Waino’s family would like to thank Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly for the tremendous support given to their father, also to the staff of the Houghton County Medical Care Facility for the care given to Waino during his stay. Additional thanks to Dr. Mark Shebuski and to Pastor Franz for their years of care and friendship; and to the many wonderful care givers, neighbors and friends who have blessed Waino’s life.
In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorials may be given to Maranatha Free Lutheran Church of Houghton or to Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly of Hancock in memory of Waino Tulikangas.
