Houghton Canal
Robert A. Peterson, 57, a resident of the Houghton Canal District and Ishpeming, suddenly passed away while working aboard a cargo ship off the coast of South Carolina Saturday March 28, 2009.
He was born on September 24, 1951, in Hancock, a son of Estella (Kotila) Peterson and the late Hubert Peterson. As a child he attended the Houghton Schools.
After High School Boobie went to work on the freight hauling ships, over the past 35 years he has worked on both the Great Lakes and salt water ships working his way up to the position of Chief Engineer.
Robert was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Hancock, the Moose Club of Proctor, MN, and a patron member of the NRA. Mr. Peterson had many interests in his spare time including motorcycle riding, gardening, collecting guns and coins.
Preceding him in death were his father Hubert Peterson, his maternal grandparents August & Hilja Kotila and his paternal grandparents Waino & Tillie Lahti and numerous aunts and uncles.
Surviving are:
His mother: Estella Peterson of the Houghton Canal District
His brother: David (Betty) Peterson of Houghton
His sisters: Linda (Glenn) Ekdahl of Paavola
Donna Peterson of Houghton Canal
His nieces & Nephews: Nicole (Tim) Wiitanen, Sheri (Jeff) Meeseman, Jeff (Danielle) Ekdahl, Tim Pascoe, Joe Pascoe, Jeremy Husby.
3 great nephews, and 2 great nieces
Ethan, Caleb, Samatha, Dylan, & Mackenzie
Very special friends Jeff & Jackie Davis of Marquette
Numerous cousins and many many friends.
As requested no service will be held at this time and a graveside service will be held later this spring in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock.
