Liminga
John E. Kappler, 65, a resident of Liminga passed away unexpectedly Thursday June 25, 2009.
He was born on March 2, 1944 in Detroit a son of the late John and Claire (Mongeau) Kappler. As a child, he moved to Lake Linden and graduated from the Lake Linden High School with the class of 1962. Mr. Kappler had gone on and graduated from Michigan Technological University with an Accounting Degree. He then received his CPA from Northeastern University and his MBA in Finance from Babson University.
Mr. Kappler was also a proud veteran having served with the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, with the 28th Squadron Patrol where he earned 5 commendation Ribbons and 2 Navy service citations.
John was very accomplished during his professional career, being published 32 times. He began his career as a senior auditor for Coopers & Lybrand in Chicago, IL, he then accepted a position at Eastern Gas & Fuel Associates beginning as a director and worked his way to the position of finance manager. John went on to work for Natural Resources Group (Peabody Coal Company) as VP of Finance. Since 1998, Mr. Kappler has made his home in Liminga and has been instructing locally as an adjunct professor for Michigan Technological University in the Business Department, Ojibwa Community College in the Business Department, and for the past 3 years for Finlandia University as Chair for the Accounting Department and as a faculty member.
On February 14, 2005 he was united in marriage to the former Trisia Grimes.
Locally Mr. Kappler was active with the Torch Lake Public Action Council, the Quincy Mine Hoist Association, and the Isle Royale Boater’s Association.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his brother Ron and his sister Sandra Stead.

A memorial service for John will be held 11 am Tuesday June 30, 2009, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Licensed Lay Minister Clay Hilman and Rev. Jimalee Jones to officiate. The Copper Country Veterans Association will hold military rites following the memorial service at the church.
John was a wonderful man who lived his life the way he wished to. He was a person with a heart—a HUGE heart who cared deeply for those around him and expressed that love well. Some benefited by his love, his understanding, his ability to listen, and caring. We hope your fondest memories of John bring a smile to your face and warm your heart.
