Elma E. Turpeinen, 90, a former resident of the Heritage Manor Apartments in Houghton and also formerly of Hancock, passed away July 15, 2009, at the Portage Hospital in Hancock shortly after being admitted. Most recently, Elma was a resident patient at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility in Hancock. She was born on December 4, 1918, in Askel a daughter of the late John and Olga (Tauriainen) Hakala. As a child, she attended the Askel School. As a young lady, Elma moved to the Chicago area and then to the Detroit area where she worked as a housekeeper. Once she returned to the Copper Country, Mrs. Turpeinen had worked as a nurse’s aide for Portage Hospital until her retirement. Mrs. Turpeinen was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church of Pelkie. She was also an advocate in the mental health community. Preceding her in death were her parents, her son George, 4 sisters and 4 brothers. Surviving are: Her daughter: Linda (Jaspal Singh) Carlson of Boulder, CO 5 grandchildren & 6 great grandchildren Her sister: Sophie Nedoli of Lake Villa, IL Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins A graveside service for Elma will be held 3 pm Monday July 20, 2009 at the Karki Hill Cemetery.
