John Paavilainen, 87, a resident of Hancock passed away Friday August 14, 2009, at the Cypress Manor Nursing Home in Hancock where he had been a resident patient since June.
He was born on September 15, 1921, in Newberry, MI, a son of the late John and Katherine (Flykt) Paavilainen. As a child, he moved to Painesdale where he resided and attended the Painesdale School. Since 1987 he has made his home in Hancock.
Mr. Paavilainen was a veteran having served with the United States Army during World War II where he was wounded in the Philippine Islands.
On June 15, 1946 he was united in marriage to the former Vieno Kallio and she preceded him in death on October 3, 2002.
John had worked for various sawmill and construction companies in the area until his health forced him into retirement.
Mr. Paavilainen was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of South Range and the D.A.V. Chapter #115.
Preceding John in death were his wife, his son Gary, a grandson, his parents, a sister, and a brother.

Steven Paavilainen of Hancock
Roger Paavilainen of Sheboygan, WI

His sister: Katie McKinstry of South Range
Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins
Funeral services for John will be held 1 pm today Monday August 17, 2009, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock with Rev. Nicholas Hopman to officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. View Cemetery of South Range.
Friends may call on Monday August 17, 2009, from 12 noon until time of services at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock.
