Hancock
Carl V. Keranen, 91, a resident of Hancock passed away Sunday September 13, 2009, at the Portage Hospital in Hancock where he had been a patient for the past 3 days.
He was born on July 30, 1918, in Baltic, a son of the late Joel and Edith (Kemppainen) Keranen. He was a graduate of the Jeffers High School and Michigan Technological University with a degree in Engineering.
Mr. Keranen was a veteran having served with the United States Army Air Corp, during World War II in China.
Following the service, Carl resided in the Detroit area and was employed with Ford Motor Company as an engineer until his retirement in 1980. Since that time he has made his home in Hancock.
Carl was united in marriage to Eileen Heikkinen and she preceded him in death in June of 1969. On August 22, 1970 he was united in marriage to the former Eila Rantala and she preceded him in death on November 9, 1994.
Mr. Keranen was a member of Ranger’s Post #6165 VFW of South Range. Carl also was a gifted craftsman, able to make his own violins.
Also preceding him in death were his sons Burton and Brian, and his brothers and sisters; Wilbert Keranen, Gertrude Aho, Viola Palosaari, and Wilho Keranen.

His step-children:
Charlene (Clayton) Vial of Livonia, MI
Dorene (Gary) Burcar of Dollar Bay
Cindy (Don) Smale of Fenton, MI
Andy Hoholek of Hancock
Michael (Vivian) Hoholek of Detroit, MI
His grandchildren: Lisa Gardner, Eric Gardner, Corey Keranen and Jason Keranen
His Step-grandchildren: Kelly Skarritt and Shannon Skarritt
His great-grandson: Brennan Gardner
Numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins
Funeral services for Carl will be held 12 noon Monday September 21, 2009, at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock with Rev. Paddy Palomaki to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock. Where Ranger’s Post #6165 VFW of South Range will hold military rites.
Friends may call on Monday September 21, 2009, from 11 am until time of services at the funeral home.
