Ruth M. (Gerald) Mantta, 74, a resident of Tapiola, passed at her home Friday morning October 9, 2009, following a short illness.
She was born on January 31, 1935, in Keweenaw Bay, a daughter of the late Uno and Ilmi (Syria) Suojanen. As a child, she was raised in Painesdale and Elo. She attended the Jeffers School and graduated from the Doelle School with the class of 1953.
On December 19, 1953, she was united in marriage to Gerald Mantta. Together, the couple resided for over 50 years in Lake Station, Indiana. While residing in there, Ruth worked as a beautician for 30 years in Hobart, Indiana. In 1998, the couple retired to make their home in Tapiola.
Ruth was a member of Mission United Lutheran Church of Pelkie. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, the Kaleva Ladies, was a past secretary for the Doelle Senior Citizens, and also belonged to the Otter Lake Sportsman’s Club.
Preceding her in death were her parents and her sister Helen Hyrkas.

Funeral services for Ruth will be held 12 noon Monday October 12, 2009, at the Mission United Lutheran Church of Pelkie with Rev. John Autio to officiate.
Friends may call on Monday October 12, 2009, from 11 am until time of services at the church.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family suggests that memorials be given to Mission United Lutheran Church of Pelkie.
