Dollar Bay
William A. Niemala, 98, a former resident of Dollar Bay passed away Friday afternoon October 16, 2009, at Our Lady of Mercy Convalescent Home in Hubbell where he had been a resident patient for the past three months.
He was born on February 5, 1911, in Dollar Bay a son of the late John and Sophie (Oikarinen) Niemala. Bill attended the Dollar Bay High School.
Mr. Niemala resided for a short time in the Detroit area before moving back home to help run the family farm. He eventually took over and operated Niemala’s Farm, becoming well known in the area and receiving many awards for growing strawberries and potatoes.
On February 5, 1974, he was united in marriage to the former Mary Deges and she preceded him in death in 2008.
Mr. Niemala was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock.
Preceding him in death were his wife, his parents, and five brothers & sisters Eino, Arthur, Martha Mackarain, Saima Austin & Anna Nippa, his niece Nancy Kurtz and his nephew Robert Nippa.
Surviving are:
His daughter: Rita Jacquinot of Hubbell
His sister: Helen Niemala of East Pointe, MI
His granddaughter: Kaya Brown of Florida
His nieces: Sally Nippa, Sally Austin, Marian Tallman, Betty Tallman, Janice (James) Cooper.
His nephew: Stanley (Mary) Niemala
His cousins: Helen Savola & Helmi Johnson
Funeral services for Bill will be held 11 am Tuesday October 20, 2009, at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock with Rev. Jimalee Jones to officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery of Hancock.
Friends may call on Tuesday October 20, 2009, from 10 am until time of services at the church.
