Houghton
Philip E. Medlyn, 73, a resident of Ravine Side Dr., Houghton passed away suddenly Wednesday evening April 21, 2004, from an apparent heart attack.
He was born in Houghton on February 12, 1931, a son of the late Edward and Edna (Nordstrom) Medlyn, and was a graduate of the Houghton High School with the class of 1948. He worked in the Kearsarge Mine, and he also served with the U.S. Army, during the Korean Conflict. He then attended Wayne St. University where he received a teaching degree.
On August 1, 1959, he was united in marriage to the former Jeannette Lietzke. They have resided in Detroit, Livonia, and for the past 10 years in Houghton.
Mr. Medlyn had worked for the Wayne Westland Community Schools in Westland, MI, as a Social Studies Teacher and Junior High School Administrator for 34 years until his retirement.
Phil was a member of the Portage Lake United Church of Houghton, the Keweenaw Historical Society where he served as a Trustee on the Board, and the Kewenaw Kernewek where he currently served as President.
Preceding him in death were his parents, 2 brothers and 1 Sister.

4 Grandchildren: Lacey Renee, Devon, Jennifer, and Trey

Marion Verran of Hurontown
Nina Cox of Houghton
1 Sister-in-law: Melba Medlyn of Houghton
numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins
Funeral services for Phil will be held on Saturday April 24, 2004, at 2 P.M. at the Portage Lake United Church of Houghton with Revs. Victoria Bethel and Philip Nancarrow to officiate. Burial will be in the Pine Grove Cemetery of Eagle Harbor, MI.
Friends may call at the Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Hancock from 5 to 8 P.M. on Friday April 23, and from 1 P.M. until time of services at the church on Saturday.
In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy the family suggests that memorials be given to Keweenaw Historical Society, Portage Lake United Church of Houghton, or St. Peter's by the Sea in Eagle Harbor.
