Robert D. “Bob” Owens, age 95 passed away Saturday morning March 21, 2009 at University Heights Health & Living Community in Indianapolis. He was a resident of Greenwood and a former 60 year resident of Morgantown.

Bob was born on February 26, 1914 in Martinsville to the late Hallie & Grace (Mendenhall) Owens. He married his loving and devoted wife of sixty-five years: V. Rosemary (Callon) Owens on April 21, 1943. She preceded him in death on October 5, 2007.

Bob is survived by one daughter: Saundra K. Perry of Columbus; one son: Dan and his wife Marcia Owens of Greenwood; twelve grandchildren: Beth and (John) Dixon, Ryan (Courtney) Owens, Keri Crabtree, Michelle (Gary) Knight, Mason (Erica) Gallmeyer, Fred Perry Jr., Jamie Perry, Joe Perry, Brett (Jeanie) Perry, Dana Perry, Julie (Bruce) Giggy and Lisa (Jim) Spray; thirty-four great grandchildren & fifteen great-great grandchildren; one sister: Carolyn Long of Butler, Ill; one step brother: Russell Schoolcraft of Bedford; two brothers: John Owens of Bloomington & Gene Owens of Reelsville.

Bob was preceded in death by one son-in-law: Fred Perry Sr.; two sisters: Lella Phillips & Florence Whited; one brother: Don Owens; one step brother: Hallie Schoolcraft.

He was a 1932 graduate of Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis. After graduation he traveled with the Civil Conservation Corp. during the 1930’s. Later, Bob went on to serve as a Staff Sergeant with the 1413th Service Command Unit for the United States Army from 1943 to1945. He retired from Civil Service as a Fireman and Security Officer at Camp Atterbury in 1965 after 23 years of service. Bob also was the Owner and Operator of Owens Coin Laundry in Morgantown from 1971 to 1984.

He was a member of the Friedens United Church of Christ in Indianapolis and was a former 50 year member of the Morgantown United Methodist Church where he was the past Sunday School Superintendent. Bob was a past Jackson Township Trustee and a longtime member of the Morgantown Lions Club. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and was a fan of the Indiana Pacers and Indiana University Basketball.

The Revs. Marc Hayden & Sarah Blossom will conduct a funeral service at 12 pm Wednesday at Meredith - Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 10 am until time of service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown with Military Graveside rites presented by the Martinsville American Legion and veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guards.

In honor of Bob, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Friedens United Church of Christ “Building Fund” 8300 S. Meridian St. Indianapolis, IN 46217.
