| | | Robert W. “Rob” Ray, age 51 of Trafalgar passed away peacefully on Monday morning, June 8, 2009 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis after a four year courageous battle with cancer. At his side was his loving wife of twenty-nine years, Karen A. (Ford) Ray whom he married on June 1, 1980 in Franklin and their children: Leslie Ray of Chicago, IL, Justin and Kyle Ray both of Trafalgar.
Rob was born September 7, 1957 in Franklin to William A. “Bill” and Ruth Evelyn (Bower) Ray who survive in Trafalgar. He will be remembered by his siblings: Mike, and his wife Brenda Ray of Greenwood, Cindy, and her husband Donald Thompson of Trafalgar, Debbie, and her husband Steve Scott of Trafalgar, David, and his wife Betsy Ray of St. Charles, IL and Scott, and his wife Dawn Ray of Trafalgar. Rob will be cherished by his many nieces & nephews and was a roll model to all.
He was a 1976 graduate of Indian Creek High School in Trafalgar where he excelled in athletics, as well as, academically ranking third in his class. In 2008, he was one of the first Athletes to be inducted into the Indian Creek High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Rob went on to graduate cum lade from Franklin College in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in Business and Accounting. While at Franklin, he continued his athletic success with being named as an All-American Wide Receiver for the Grizzlies and was named the Heartland Collegiate Conference’s Most Valuable Player. At graduation Rob was honored as the President of the Delta Mu Delta business honorary, named to the Alpha scholastic honorary and was presented the Wall Street Journal Award for his outstanding performance in the classroom.
Rob worked as a Certified Public Accountant and was a Partner with Woodbury & Company in Franklin for past twenty-eight years. Prior to that, he worked as a CPA for Ernst & Whinney in Indianapolis.
He was a twenty year member of the Fair Haven Christian Church in Franklin, past president of the Franklin Rotary Club, member of the Indiana CPA Society and the Franklin College Touchdown Club.
Rob’s life was his family and he enjoyed being the best father and husband that he could be. Rob was involved in all his children’s sporting activities, either by coaching or volunteering. He was an avid photographer, enjoyed playing golf and was a fan of the Indianapolis Colts.
The Revs. Jeff Johnson & Steve Fair will conduct a funeral service 10:30 am Friday at the Fair Haven Christian Church, 1476 W. 300 S. in Franklin. Friends may call from 3 till 8 pm on Thursday at the Church. Burial will be at First Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin.
Memorial contributions may be sent in honor of Rob to the “Robbie Ray Memorial Athletic Scholarship” PO Box 308 Morgantown, Indiana 46160. This scholarship will be awarded to an Indian Creek Athlete who will attend Franklin College.
