| | | Joseph J. “Joe” Schmidt, age 73 passed away Wednesday evening, August 19, 2009 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin. He was a resident of Morgantown.
Joe was born May 31, 1936 in Osgood to the late William and Delma (Abplanalp) Schmidt. He married his loving wife of 46 years, Betty A. (Cook) Schmidt on October 7, 1961 in Morgantown. She preceded him in death on May 3, 2008.
He was much loved and cherished by his children: Betsy Jo Schmidt of Franklin, Joe and his wife Dana Schmidt of Hope, Dewayne and his wife Maleta Schmidt of Morgantown and Jeff and his wife Sandy Schmidt of Indianapolis. He will be remembered by his sister: Linda (Jim) Fryer of Milan and brother: Richard “Dick” (Linda) Schmidt of Moores Hill. Joe was Papaw to Tyler, Katie, Makalynn, Statler, Dean, Isabelle and Drew.
He was preceded in death by a sister: Lou Miller; two brothers: William “Bill” & Lester Schmidt and one granddaughter: Rhianna Rose Schmidt.
Joe served in Germany as a Sergeant with the United States Army from 1954 to 1957. After the service he worked as a logger for Mitchell Veneer in Greensburg. He continued to work in logging by co-owning and operating a logging company with his brother Bill in Greensburg. In 1962, Joe was hired by the Ford Motor Company and enjoyed his 38 years of service as a Quality Control Inspector, retiring in 2001.
He attended the Trafalgar General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn and was a member of the Ford Ambassadors Club. Joe was the recipient of the 1979 Johnson County Conservation Farmer of the Year award. He enjoyed working on his farm and raising beef cattle. Joe was a supporter of local family owned restaurants and enjoyed going to local fish fry’s. He enjoyed his family and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Joe enjoyed doing things right and by example and inspired others to do the same. He will be missed by all for his sense of humor and generous friendship.
Brother Stan White & Brother Jeff Bryant will conduct a funeral service 10 am Saturday at Meredith - Clark Funeral Home Cremation & Personalization Center, 179 E. Mulberry Street in Morgantown. Friends may call from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at East Hill Cemetery in Morgantown with Military Graveside Rites presented by the Martinsville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Honor Guards.
Memorial contributions may be made in care of Meredith-Clark Funeral Home, PO Box 308 Morgantown, IN 46160. Those contributions will be designate to a special cause by the Schmidt family.
