Helen Lindeback Cullen, 92, went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at Cornerstone Village nursing home in Pittsburg, Kansas. She was born to Harvey and Ida Knudson on January 11, 1916, on a farm in Kossuth County, Iowa. Her first eight years of school was in a little country school about a mile and a half from her home. She attended and graduated from Armstrong High School. Having a very good singing voice, she was very active in glee club and later on, when she was older, sang for many special occasions. After graduation, she worked for Dr. O.H. Miller in Estherville, Iowa.

Helen returned to Armstrong to marry Martin J. Lund on September 28, 1935. They farmed near Armstrong for a number of years before moving to Omaha, Nebraska. Having lived there for three years they moved to Ceylon, Minnesota where they owned and operated Lund’s Recreation. Helen will always be remembered for her great hamburgers.

Martin passed away in December 1962. Helen married Gerald K. Cullen in August, 1965. They spent most of their married life in Emmetsburg, Iowa where they owned and operated the Lucky Charm Motel and the Robert Emmett Trailer Court. She also worked for the Palo Alto County Hospital for a number of years.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and also a lifetime member of the Ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary of Armstrong. After Gerald passed away in July, 2000, she lived with her son, David Lund in Ceylon, Minnesota and then her daughter, Judith, at Agape’ Boarding School in Stockton, Missouri. She was lovingly called “Grandma Helen” by all the staff and the students there. She also was a resident of Stockton Nursing Home for a time.

Helen had a love for life and also an adventuresome spirit. When she was younger she took flying lessons and although did not go on to get her pilot’s license, she did fly solo. She loved to travel, music, flowers, going fishing and bird watching, and playing games. Although she was a hard worker all of her life, she always found time for fun and laughter. She was a wonderful cook and always had some kind of treat ready for anyone who might stop in for coffee and a visit. She will always be remembered for her fried chicken and potato salad. Being a full blooded Norwegian, she loved her coffee. She was a very loving mother and grandmother and was a good friend to many people.

Helen is survived by a daughter, Judith Cuthbertson and husband, Robert of Topeka, Kansas; son-in-law, Jack Baker and wife, Carolyn of Rochester, Minnesota; grandchildren,Kristine Baker, Kurt Baker, Keith Baker, Terry Lund, Kelly Fisher, Gregory Vacura, Rodman Vacura, Andrew Vacura and Martin Siekawitch; great grandchildren, Jack Baker, Jenna Baker, Haylee Lund, Austin Lund, Trevor Lund, Stefany Fisher, Cody Fisher, Coley Brogan and Luke Vacura; a brother, Kenneth Knutson and his wife, Marilyn of Litchfield, Illinois. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews; other relatives; and many good friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Ida Knudson; husbands, Martin Lund and Gerald Cullen; a daughter, Sharon Baker; a son, David Lund; a sister, Mavis Knudson; brothers, Clifford Knudson and Lester Knudson.
