Helen Jeanette (Murphy) Barber, called “Murf” by her friends, the daughter of Morton and Emma (Soens) Murphy, was born September 14, 1926 in Emmetsburg, Iowa. She grew up in Emmetsburg and graduated from Catholic High School in 1944. During World War II Jeanette worked at Boeing in Omaha. On June 14, 1950 she married Thomas Richard Barber of West Bend, Iowa. They made their first home in Iowa City while Rich attended the University of Iowa.
In 1952 Rich and Jeanette moved to Ruthven where they raised seven children and were active members of the community for over fifty years. Jeanette was a wonderful wife and a loving mother. She also was a supportive mother-in-law and an involved grandmother. Her family benefited from her love, humor and her talents for cooking and sewing. For over forty years she tirelessly supported the Ruthven Rams; the teams that her children played on and her husband coached.
Jeanette was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven teaching Religious Education and participating in all women’s functions.
She enjoyed golfing, playing cards with friends, ballroom dancing with Rich, cooking and sewing, a chat over a cup of coffee with a friend; and especially a day at the casino with her sisters.
Jeanette passed away on Sunday, October 26, 2008, at Spencer Hospital, at the age of 82 from effects caused by a stroke in 2005.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, Morton and Emma Murphy; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Raymond and Lulu Barber; her sister, Louise Appelquist; and her brother, Francis.
