Joel Orlo Eaton, son of Howard O. and Edith M. (Jacobsen) Eaton, was born January 4, 1935, near Ruthven, Iowa. He received his education in Ruthven, graduating from Ruthven High School in 1953.
In 1957 Joel was inducted into the United States Army. After his father’s death he was discharged to return home. He then returned to service in 1960 during the Berlin Crisis and was later honorably discharged due to medical reasons.
On November 6, 1965, Joel was united in marriage to Charlene Wilcox at the United Methodist Church in Ruthven.
Joel owned and operated the Texaco Gas Station in Ruthven for several years and worked for other local gas station owners. Joel worked at Eaton’s in Spencer, Iowa for ten years, retiring at the age of 62.
Joel enjoyed gardening and playing cards, especially Pinochle and Euchre. He also was a talented mechanic and enjoyed working on all types of vehicles.
Joel passed away Monday, January 9, 2012, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer, Iowa, at the age of 77. He was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Edith; a sister, Delores Eaton; and an infant great granddaughter, Madison Schnetzer.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene of Ruthven, Iowa; his children, Allen “Red” and Tami Eaton of Ruthven, Iowa, Greg Eaton and his friend, Elisabeth of Arvada, Colorado, Sheryl Parks of Ames, Iowa, Michael Eaton of St. Paul, Minnesota, Doug and Tammy Schnetzer of Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, Debbie and Greg Petersen of Ruthven, Iowa and Diane Baker and her friend, Jeff of Ruthven, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; a brother, Roger and Eileen Eaton of Shiloh, Illinois; as well as many other relatives and friends.
