Georgie Mayfield Balay, 91, Martinsville, died at 8 a.m. April 23, 2004, at Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis.

The son of the late Toner Edgar and Margaret Elizabeth (Waddle) Balay, he was born March 16, 1913, in Morgan County. He was the widower of LaVerne (Siddons) Balay, whom he married June 29, 1942. She died Aug. 4, 2000.

Balay was a barber, working from 1951 to 1954 at Mose Coffee Barber Shop in Martinsville. He was owner/operator of Georgie's Barber Shop in Martinsville from 1955 to 1971. In 1972, he moved to Greencastle, where he worked for Dick's Barber Shop, retiring in 1972.

He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Martinsville and a member of the 1927 Morgan County basketball champions team.

He served in the United States Army from 1942-1944.

His family said he enjoyed farming, fox chasing, coon hunting and basketball.

Survivors include a son, Terry S. Balay, Martinsville; five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

A son, Phil Balay, and two brothers, Lewis and Harry Balay, also preceded him in death.

The service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Church of the Nazarene, 1609 John R. Wooden Drive, Martinsville. Pastor Stacy Allen will officiate. Burial will be in Nebo Memorial Cemetery with military graveside rites.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Neal & Summers Mortuary in Martinsville and from 1 p.m. until the time of the service Tuesday at the church.
